Make your tea cup (Shawan)

"Time, Matter and Me"

26th  July/ Thursday/ 10AM - 5PM

Making of a cup using the ancestral ball technique followed by shaping it with a rudimentary wooden tool.

Looking for the relation between the object and the hand, we explore the balance of form and dimension in a cadence of rhythmic time like a pulse.

We propose the construction of a memory related to the act of making, each one's self expression translated into matter, every moment a moment of contemplation, the meeting with one's self in a tea cup.

Teachers: Paula Violante and Miguel Neto

Wooden Puppets

27th July/ Friday/ 10AM - 5PM

We will learn the basics about wood carving by making a puppet head in linden wood.
Linden wood is soft and dense at the same time, it presents a uniform growth structure without very visible veins. For centuries it was the favorite wood of the great European sculptors and carvers.
A light and sturdy wood, ideal to be transformed into a toy.
Each participant will sculpt a puppet head, that will be given a natural finish and some color so that then it can be dressed and the show can start!

Raku: Decorating and firing Shawan (Japonese Tea Cups)

"Time, Matter and Me"

28th July/ Saturday/ 10AM - 5PM

Our starting point for this workshop is a set of tea cups that needs to be decorated and glazed. This will be our assignment followed by the Raku firing where we can appreciate the red hot pieces as they come out of the kiln and be surprised by the different qualities that this process allows.
