Basketry, understood as the art of constructing objects and structures with plant fibres, is closely linked with climatic and soil conditions that grow the most varied raw materials used in basketwork.
Each material has its techniques, and the Iberian Peninsula has an extraordinary diversity of both, materials and techniques.
Carlos Fontales, a Spanish researcher, has done an excellent job of collecting all this wealth of knowledge, and further more, he has learnt and put it all into practice!
Specialized teacher, Carlos shares his vast knowledge with interested people all over Europe, and also with us here in Cerdeira.
Carlos Fontales is the author of two books on basketry:
- “Cestaria de los pueblos da Galícia”;
- “Más que cestos- Cestaría española”.
Here's an inspiring little video with examples from this approach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=20&v=S-IPJu-2ORU
Starting from the different techniques of working and interweaving wicker we will be able to create sculptures of large dimensions, resistant structures and at the same time light and ethereal.
An incredibly versatile technique and ideal for designing and giving form to the most extraordinary ideas.
