Xana Monteiro and Carlos Lima

Xana Monteiro and Carlos Lima are professional ceramicists, living and working together in their studio in Molelos/Portugal.

They decided, many years ago right after their apprenticeshop to continue the tradition of black ceramics of their hometown Molelos.

Keeping alive this very special tecnique and the woodfiring of the pottery, both started soon to innovate, creating new forms and different products. Always based on the work with the potters wheel, the very fine finishing made with a flat stone gives e shiny , matt and very distinctive surface and brings to live the wonderfull forms of their objects like vessels, tableware or sculptures.

Day 1

  • A short history of clay.

  • Construction of geometric pieces using:

    • Sensory techniques;

    • Ball and Slab Techniques;

  • Decoration on wet, soft and dry pieces;

  • Varied textures and polishes.

Day 2

  • Collages and joints for different geometries;

  • Finishing of the pieces executed the previous day.

Through a set of techniques that lay the foundation for working with clay we will work with geometric shapes as a theme.

An introduction to the history of this material will bring us in touch with the long tradition of ceramics and inspire us to explore the proposed theme.

Apparently simple forms will challenge us to find the best way to build them.
